Why don’t the “best” companies win in business?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately… 👇
Every day, great companies go bankrupt and die.
Some of these companies were obsessed with product quality and customer experience.
They think the fact that they make the “best” of something makes them bulletproof.
Meanwhile, their louder (sometimes annoying) competitors win.
Here’s a few examples:
American Airlines ranks 1st or 2nd in size, yet is almost always at the bottom of customer satisfaction surveys
Coca-Cola is the world’s most valuable soft-drink, but Pepsi consistently beats them in blind taste tests
Monday.com has a weaker feature set than ClickUp, yet completely ran circles around them in growth because everyone know their name first
Speaking of Monday.com, check out this chart from Google Trends:
ClickUp - the better project management software - is getting spanked.
What’s going on here?
It’s not luck.
It’s just marketing.
They either got there first, or they got there loudest.
THIS IS WHAT MARKETING IS.
👉 Visibility beats perfection.
👉 Building buzz beats building polish.
👉 Becoming the best known beats becoming the best.
Spending years perfecting your product without making a bunch of noise about it is like painting a masterpiece in a dark room.
Nobody ever sees or knows about it.
In this sense, being the “best” is just vanity.
Tweaking endlessly, building and re-building, reaching for perfection…
All of that garbage is about you, not the customer.
There’s something inside of you that you’re trying to fix by building a perfect business.
You wanna know the truth?
If you really believe in your company, and it really helps people, you have a moral obligation to tell people about it.
The RIGHT THING TO DO is to climb up on a table with a bullhorn and shout about it.
So, don’t try to be the best. Be the best known.
And feel good about it.
