luck stacking
We’re going to talk about fishing today.
You in?
Awesome 🐟 🤣
It’s easy to think that fishing is all about the lure.
And that the more time and effort you spend on getting the perfect lure, the more fish you’ll catch.
I used to fish a lot as a kid, and I remember these commercials for the “Banjo Minnow” on TV.
This lure was AWESOME.
It glinted in the sun, had real minnow-like movement, and shot after shot showed the lure catching big fish.
So, I bought one with my chore money.
And guess what?
The Banjo Minnow performed like every other lure I had in my tackle box.
This experience taught me something.
The lure is important, but catching a big fish isn’t about lures alone.
POD marketing is the same way.
We think success is about having the perfect website, the perfect product, adding a few conversion tricks to our product page, and BAM.
The market will throw money at you.
Not true.
If you want to catch a big fish in POD, it’s not JUST the lure.
It’s also about how many hooks you put into the water.
I call this Luck Stacking:
Just like in fishing, where most of your hooks come back empty, in POD most of your tests will come back as failures.
You beat this by doing everything you can to make sure your store, product page, and ads are good.
And then…
You just put a lot of hooks in the water.
IE. TEST A BOATLOAD OF PRODUCTS.
Now, you’re probably hearing this and going, “Ah, so it’s like a slot machine?”
NO.
Not quite.
This isn’t Vegas, where you push one single button and after that, it’s pure luck (0% skill/100% luck).
It takes skill to prep your store, product page, and write ads.
There are things you can do to prepare yourself for a win.
Then you toss a product out into the world and see what comes back.
This is more like 80% skill/20% luck.
So, let’s pull it all together.
Research, but know it’s not a crystal ball. Do the homework, just accept from the get-go that great product ideas usually don’t survive first real contact with buyers.
Test fast. Perfect products won’t generate revenue, the right product does.
Track like a scientist. CTR, CVR, CAC, ROAS, etc. Think of them like checkpoints.
Double-down the SECOND you feel momentum. If you think you have a winner, drop everything else and give it 100% focus.
Cull the losers without mercy. Every loser is just wasting your time. Capture the data, and move on to your next test.
Keep testing new products.
Stack your luck.
Let the math do what wishing never will.
Luck can’t dodge a lake full of hooks forever.
Alright, catch you tomorrow!
